The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH Act) provides financial incentives to healthcare providers for demonstrating meaningful use of electronic health records (EHR). Passed as a part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the economic stimulus bill), incentives under HITECH began in 2011 and are scheduled to continue until 2015. The measure also imposes notification requirements if a breach of unsecured protected health information occurs.
